In more than 15 years of intimate involvement with the Minnesota legislative process and public affairs, Brian has drafted and shepparded in legislation for numerous organizations and causes. At Goff & Howard, Brian has successfully lobbied on issues ranging from taxes to natural resources, minority teacher training programs to insurance regulations.
Before coming to Goff & Howard, Brian directed communications and legislative affairs for Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson. He provided leadership on initiating significant state legislation, including the passage of one of the nation's strongest anti-predatory mortgage lending bills.
Brian also served as the director of legislative affairs for the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE), where he was responsible for overseeing government relations, communicating with members, organizing a political action committee, and ensuring safe work environments and benefits protection for Minnesota employees.
From 1993-1994, Brian served one term in the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing Osseo, Brooklyn Park, and Champlin. "I've served in the Legislature, and now I'm on the other side of the committee hearing table when I meet with legislators on clients' behalf. It really helps to have walked in their shoes and know what kind of information is helpful to them," said Brian.
Brian has worked on numerous campaigns, including those of former Attorney General Mike Hatch, current Attorney General Lori Swanson, former Duluth Mayor Herb Bergson, and the late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone. Additionally, he served on the advance staff for then-President Bill Clinton's several visits to Minnesota in the 1990s.
A native of Duluth, Brian joined the active Army 1st Armored Division after graduating from high school. He spent 21 years in the Minnesota National Guard and Army Reserve and was stationed in Germany, Korea, and other areas around the world. He continues his service to the country as a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
Brian attended the University of Minnesota. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, visiting Lake Superior, and spending time with his family.
